Australia Coal Export Up 8.27% M-o-M in Oct’18

Coal shipments exported from Australia rose by 8.27% in Oct’18 on a month-to-month basis, as per the vessel line-up data compiled by CoalMint Research.

Australian coal exports totaled 33.50 MnT in the month of Oct’18, against 30.94 MnT in Sep’18.

Moreover, on a year-on-year basis, Australia’s Oct’18 coal exports have increased by 10.64% in comparison to 30.28 MnT of exports in Oct’17.

Major Coal Importers:

Japan remained the largest receiver of Australian coal in Oct’18, followed by China, South Korea and India — these four nations together accounted for more than three-fourths of Australia’s total coal shipments during the month under review.

Japanese coal import from Australia rose by 25% to 10.86 MnT in Oct’18, compared with 8.69 MnT in Sep’18.

Chinese coal import from Australia rose by 2.6% to 7.71 MnT in Oct’18, compared with 7.51 MnT in Sep’18.

South Korea replaced India to become the third-largest Australian coal importer during the month of Oct’18.

South Korean coal import from Australia rose by 20.1% to 4.08 MnT in Oct’18, compared with 3.40 MnT in Sep’18.

Indian coal import from Australia increased by 6.75% to 3.84 MnT in Oct’18, compared with 3.60 MnT in Sep’18.

Taiwanese coal import from Australia decreased by 10.2% to 2.77 MnT in Oct’18, compared with 3.08 MnT in Sep’18.

Australia’s Major Coal Handling Ports in Oct’18:

Newcastle sustained its leadership position as the largest coal handling port of Australia in Oct’18; coal export shipments from the port rose by 18.1% M-o-M to 13.85 MnT in Oct’18, compared with 11.73 MnT in Sep’18.

Gladstone, DBCT, Hay Point and Abbot Point were the other major coal handling ports in Oct’18.
