Background & Commentary:

RPC (Anode Grade) also called GPC (Green Petroleum Coke), a premium grade of Petroleum Coke generally having low Sulphur and low metal contents with sponge like structure, is sold by IOCL through auction process only. Various calciners purchase this product and conduct calcination to produce CPC (Calcined Petroleum Coke) which is used for making Anode in Aluminum, Graphite industries etc.

RPC Grade A has Sulphur limit of 1.25% max whereas RPC Grade B has Sulphur limit of more than1.25% up to 2.5% max.

IOCL has been selling RPC through auction process in line with directive from MOP&NG (Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas) issued during 2012. The auction is conducted in two phases i.e. initially auction is conducted for those customers who are situated in same State where the refinery is located. If any quantity is left over from this auction, the auction is again conducted for outside State customers. The auction is conducted by MSTC since beginning of commencing the sale through auction process.

The price of RPC is more than double of Fuel Grade Petcoke. The RPC price in last auction was in the range of INR 22,000-23,000/MT against Fuel Grade Petcoke price, which is in the range of INR 9,000-9,500/MT.
