India’s eastern port of Paradip has temporarily stopped shipping iron ore as heavy rains have made it impossible to handle the commodity which tends to absorb moisture, port Chairman Biplav Kumar said on Friday.
“We have to take safety precautions. We are not allowing any moisture-laden cargo to be loaded,” he added.
Loadings on at least eight ships have been stopped for the past three days because the iron ore has high moisture content. The ships have been waiting outside the port to carry iron ore, mostly to China.
A source at the port’s traffic department said he expected the situation to be normal in a day or two. The halt is temporary and it will have no impact on monthly iron ore exports, he added.
The port exported 16.137 million tonnes of iron ore in 2009-10, mostly to China. The rains have not hit other cargo operations.
