Thailand Billet Imports Hit 20-Month High in Aug’18

Billet imports to the Thailand reported a sharp gain of 119% M-o-M in Aug’18 & recorded the highest volume of imports since Dec’16, the trade statistics released by the custom reported.

In the month of Aug’18, the nation has imported around 301,322 MT billet against 137,636 MT in Jul’18. Prior to this the highest volume was imported during Dec’16 at 440,625 MT.

Further, on Y-o-Y in Aug 2018 imports registered a rise of 76.47% against 173,692 MT in Aug 2017.

Iran was the major billet exporter to Thailand in Aug’18, whose billet exports to Thailand increased by 281% M-o-M & stood at around 195,524 MT (64.88%), followed by Japan & Ukraine whose exports stood at 24,455 MT & 19,951 MT , respectively.

While the nation has imported about 1,554,722 MT Billet in Jan-Aug’18 against 1,320,220 MT in Jan-Aug’17, incline by 17.77% on yearly premises.

During this period (Jan-Aug’18), Iran has exported approximately 55.01% billet (855,209 MT) to the nation, followed by Japan (366,589 MT) & India (83,021 MT). Prior to this in the same preceding last year, Iran’s billet export to the nation was around 505813 MT, surge almost 69% on yearly basis in CY18.

In the month of August 2018, the crude steel production of Thailand was around 395,000 MT and in CY18 (Jan-Aug) it was approximately 3,069,320 MT. Meanwhile, in CY17 the figure of crude steel production stood at 4,225,000 MT, & 3,879,246 MT in CY16.

Pig iron imports from Russia & India increased Sharply

Russia continues to remain the largest Pig iron supplier to Thailand. In Aug’18, Russian & Indian billet exports to Thailand recorded at 79,378 MT & 57,859 MT, whose exports registered the highest volume in CY 18 & all time high.

In CY18 (Jan-Aug) – Russia & India was the major pig iron exporter to Thailand & exported about 162,675 MT (57.55%) & 87,741 MnT (31.04%), respectively.

In context to export prices, global offers for steel grade pig Iron is assessed at USD 380-390/MT FoB India, USD 363-375/MT FOB Brazil & USD 365-370/MT FoB Black sea.
