India’s Ship Breaking Volumes Climb 37% in August

Alang (Gujarat) is considered to be one of the largest ships breaking yard in the world located in Western India, has reported ship breaking volumes of about 147,289 MT in Aug’18, inclined by 36.67% against 107,765 MT in Jul’18, as per the customs data maintained with SteelMint.

As per SteelMint sources, the most of mid size mills in Gujarat have ramped up their production capacities of Ingot/Billets during the Q1 & Q2 of FY18. As a result demand for raw materials (scrap) is rise, which led to surge in increased ship breaking volumes.

On contrary, yearly comparison, the Ship Breaking volumes have diminished by 60.58% to 147,289 MT in Aug’18 as compared to 373,652 MT in Aug’17 and CY18 (Jan-Aug) it registered at 1,614,686 MT which is slightly down by 5.59% against 1,710,405 MT with previous time frame in CY17.

Alang, one of the largest yards is also the primary source of raw material for getting high yield due to the high quality of steel, which comes in the form of re-rollable scrap from ships.

The general features of steel, which is used to design ships are – ability to withstand pressure and same features transformed into manufacturing of rods and bars might stand parallel.
