Coal shipments exported from Australia fell by 7.32% in Aug’18 on a month-to-month basis, as per the vessel line-up data compiled by CoalMint Research.
Australian coal exports totaled 31.16 MnT in the month of Aug’18, against 33.62 MnT in Jul’18.

On a year-on-year basis, Australia’s Aug’18 coal exports remained almost the same in comparison to 31.3 MnT of exports in Aug’17.
Major Coal Importers:
Japan remained the largest receiver of Australian coal in Aug’18, followed by China, South Korea and India — these four nations together accounted for more than three-fourths of Australia’s total coal shipments during the month under review.
However, Japanese coal import from Australia fell by 5.7% to 10.07 MnT in Aug’18, compared with 10.68 MnT in Jul’18.
Chinese coal import from Australia fell by 2.2% to 6.81 MnT in Aug’18 and was the lowest in the last four months.
South Korea replaced India to become the third-largest Australian coal importer during the month of Aug’18.
Indian coal import from Australia decreased by 11.5% to 3.87 MnT in Aug’18, compared with 4.37 MnT in Jul’18.

Newcastle sustained its leadership position as the largest coal handling port of Australia in Aug’18; however, coal export shipments from the port fell by 15.8% M-o-M to 12.76 MnT in Aug’18, compared with 15.15 MnT in Jul’18.
DBCT, Gladstone, Hay Point and Abbot Point were the other major coal handling ports in Aug’18.
