Taiwan: Coal Imports Down 5% Y-o-Y in H1 CY18

Taiwan’s coal import has fallen 5% during the first half year period of CY18. Coal import by the country was recorded at 33.6 MnT in Jan’18-Jun’18 compared with the corresponding period’s total of 35.4 MnT attained in CY17.

On the monthly basis, Coal import in Jun’18 ended the country’s 3-month rising streak, as imports had fell to 6.48 MnT against 6.56 MnT in May’18. However, on the yearly basis, imports were up 16% from 5.58 MnT in Jun’17.

The country is slowly making a move away from coal and nuclear power, as testified by the recent LNG deal signed with the US company.

Taiwan’s CPC Corp has signed a USD 25 Billion Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) deal with US Cheniere Energy earlier this month, taking a huge step in transiting away from coal and nuclear power. The deal will see Chebiere sell 2 MnT LNG to Taiwan per year starting from 2021.

Taiwan relies on imported energy resources for 98% of its needs, and is the world’s fifth largest LNG importer. However, the country intends to increase the contribution of natural gas in energy mix before effectively phasing out the nuclear reactors in a planned manner under the “Nuclear-free Homeland” vision.
