Colombian Coal Exports Fall 26% M-o-M in May’18

Colombian coal exports have dropped 26% on the month to 7.14 MnT in May’18 against 9.66 MnT in Apr’18. Exports were also down 43% on the year compared with 12.46 MnT in May’17.

Monthly exports had fell after rising for the past two months, as inclement weather hampered domestic coal production leading to fewer quantity for exports. However, despite suffering heavy loss in May’18, Colombia’s total exports have managed to record a minor growth of 2% during the first 5 months of CY18.

The country has so far exported 40.28 MnT coal in Jan’18-May’18 period as compared with 39.46 MnT recorded in the same period last year.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Non-coking coal accounts for 94% of the total Colombian export in May’18, dropped 25% M-o-M to 6.72 MnT compared with 9 MnT in Apr’18.

Met coke exports decreased 38% M-o-M to 0.21 MnT in May’18 compared with 0.34 MnT in Apr’18.

Coking coal exports fell to its lowest total for the CY18, recorded at 0.13 MnT in May’18. Exports of Pet coke recorded the only increase during the month, which rose 13% on the month to 0.09 MnT in May’18.

Major Coal Importers:
Turkey remained the largest coal receiver from Colombia in May’18. Turkish coal imports declined 26% M-o-M to 1.46 MnT in May’18, which were also 24% lower on the year compared with 1.91 MnT in May’17.

Chile was the second-largest coal importer in May’18. Coal import by the country was down 18% M-o-M to 0.8 MnT, which had also fallen 34% Y-o-Y from 1.21 MnT in May’17.

South Korea replaced the Netherlands to become the third largest importer in May’18.

South Korean imports increased 55% on the month to 0.68 MnT in May’18; also rising 19% on the year from 0.57 MnT in May’17.

Europe Bound Exports Wane– Weak coal demand in Europe reduced Colombian coal exports to its major customers particularly Netherlands, Spain and Portugal.

Coal import from the Netherlands dropped 34% M-o-M to 0.49 MnT in May’18, which was also 82% lower on the year from 2.77 MnT in May’17. Country’s total imports during the first 5 months (Jan’18-May’18) have fallen 47% Y-o-Y to 3.11 MnT.

Coal import by Spain reduced to half during the month of May’18, while year-to-date total also witness a drop of 34% on yearly basis to 1.92 MnT in Jan’18-May’18. Imports by Portugal have also decreased 41% Y-o-Y during the period.
