South Africa: Ferrous Scrap Exports Fall Marginally in H1 2018

South Africa one of the leading scrap exporter has observed marginal fall in its ferrous scrap exports in H1’2018. As per recent customs data, South Africa exported 235,923 MT ferrous scrap during H1’2018, down 4% Y-o-Y as against 246,500 MT scrap imports recorded during the first half of last year.

Port wise – The majority of the scrap exports made from South Africa have been done through major ports like Durban (38%), Johannesburg (31%), Cape Town (13%), Pretoria (10%) and Port Elizabeth (7%) in H1 2018.

India remained the largest importer of South African ferrous scrap – India imported highest 112,953 MT ferrous scrap in H1’18, up 32% Y-o-Y as against 85,460 MT in H1’17. Pakistan imported 75,898 MT in H1’18, down 23%Y-o-Y as against 98,287 MT in H1’17. Top three importers India, Pakistan and Bangladesh occupied 48%, 32% and 12% share of total ferrous scrap exports from South Africa in H1’18.

On the other hand, Bangladesh witnessed a considerable growth of 62% Y-o-Y in H1 2018 amid increasing scrap consumption in the country. Indonesia recorded a fall of 27% Y-o-Y in scrap imports from South Africa in H1’18.

According to the data released by World Steel Association, crude steel production in South Africa stood at 3.19 MnT during first half in CY18, up 4% as against 3.08 MnT produced same period last year.

South African Pig iron exports rise 14% Y-o-Y in H1’18 – The country exported 256,398 MT Pig iron in H1’18 as against 225,803 MT in H1’17, up 14% Y-o-Y. Rising Pig iron exports could have reflected in marginal fall in ferrous scrap exports from South Africa. Top importers of South African Pig iron were USA, Portugal and Netherland occupying 31%, 12% and 10% share in total exports in H1 2018.

South African scrap exports fell 14% M-o-M in June – The country witnessed fall of 14% M-o-M in its ferrous scrap exports recording at 43,506 MT in Jun’18 as against exports recorded at 50,469 MT in May’18. Notably, exports turned down in June amid high global scrap prices after witnessing 14 months high exports in May’18.

India witnessed marginal fall in scrap imports from South Africa by 4% M-o-M in June while Pakistan and Bangladesh witnessed 21% and 44% decrease on seasonal slowdown in activities in Jun’18.

On yearly premises, the country witnessed considerable growth by 36% Y-o-Y in ferrous scrap exports in Jun’18 as against 32,028 MT exports in Jun’17.
