Trade statistics released by Canada custom shows that the iron ore exports by the country recorded at 2 MnT in June’18. The exports depicted significant decline by 39% as compared to June’17 exports at 3.29 MnT. However, on monthly basis exports witnessed marginal increase as against 1.96MnT in May’18.
IOC lowered guidance for 2018
At IOC (Iron Ore Company of Canada), the revised guidance for 2018 production is 9 to 10 MnT of iron ore pellets and concentrates (previously 10.3 to 11.3 MnT). Owing to local union workforce voted to strike, operations were disrupted, now they have reached to a new labor agreement. Thus, It has achieved a normal rate of production towards the end of June 2018.
The exports by the country for quarter ending June’18 witnessed at 7.19 MnT, down 21% as against 9.15 MnT in quarter ending Mar’18. On yearly basis, exports dropped by 23% as compared to 9.37 MnT in Q2 CY’17.
The non-agglomerated ore (Lumps and Fines) depicted fall of 21% M-o-M to 1.4 MnT in June’18 as against 1.77 MnT in May’18. The Y-o-Y exports marked 34% decrease as against June’17 exports at 2.13 MnT.
Agglomerated ore (pellets and concentrates) exports in June’18 witnessed at 0.59 MnT, up by more than three folds M-o-M as compared to May’18 exports at 0.19 MnT. However, Y-o-Y exports depicted a decline of 49% in June’18 as against June’17 exports at 1.16 MnT.

France stood the largest importer of Canadian iron ore in June’18 with total imports at 0.31 MnT, up by more than thrice on monthly basis as against 0.09 MnT a month before. Japan and China imports stood at 0.3 MnT each for the month.
