Coal shipments exported from Australia fell by 3.18% in Jul’18 on a month-to-month basis, as per the vessel line-up data compiled by CoalMint Research.
Australian coal exports totaled 33.62 MnT in the month of Jul’18, against 34.72 MnT in Jun’18.

On a year-on-year basis, Australia’s Jul’18 coal exports remained almost the same in comparison to 33.51 MnT of exports in Jul’17.
On a half-yearly basis, the country’s total coal exports were recorded at 218.49 MnT during the first 7 months of CY18 (Jan’18-Jul’18), which was 4.5% higher than 209.02 MnT exported in the corresponding 2017 period.
Major Importers of Coal from Australia:
Japan became the largest receiver of Australian coal in Jul’18, followed by China, South Korea and India — these four nations together accounted for more than three-fourths of Australia’s total coal shipments during the month under review.
Japanese coal imports from Australia rose by 21% to 10.65 MnT in Jul’18, compared with 8.80 MnT in Jun’18.
However, Chinese coal imports from Australia fell ~40% to 6.82 MnT in Jul’18, compared with 11.35 MnT in Jun’18.
South Korea replaced India to become the third-largest Australian coal importer during the month of Jul’18.
South Korea imported 4.29 MnT of Australian coal in Jul’18, up ~45% from 2.96 MnT in Jun’18.
On the other hand, Indian coal imports increased by ~15% to 4.15 MnT in Jul’18, compared with 3.39 MnT in Jun’18.

Newcastle sustained its leadership position as the largest coal handling port of Australia in Jul’18; coal export shipments from the port rose by 9.1% M-o-M to 15.15 MnT in Jul’18, compared with 13.89 MnT in Jun’18.
Gladstone, DBCT, Hay Point and Abbot Point were the other major coal handling ports in Jul’18.
