Canadian Coal Exports Drop 2% Y-o-Y in H1 CY18

Canadian coal exports have dropped 2% during the first half of CY18, despite recording a 15-month high total in Jun’18.

As per the data provided by Canadian customs, coal exports from the country were marked at 16.64 MnT during the first 6 months of CY18, against 17.04 MnT coal recorded in the same period last year.

Canada’s monthly exports in Jun’18 attained a 15 month high total since Mar’17, as the country had seen robust imports from its major consumer-Japan. Canadian exports during the month stood 3.51 MnT, up 22% M-o-M from 2.87 MnT in May’18, which was also 12% higher on the year compared with 3.13 MnT in Jun’17.

However, a weak import from South Korea and China has weighted down Canadian total exports in H1 CY18, as it has witness a slight fall on the year-on-year basis.

Grade-wise Exports:
Bituminous coal export from Canada totaled 3.01 MnT in Jun’18, highest since Mar’17. Export had increased 16% M-o-M from 2.59 in May’18.

Year-to-date, bituminous coal exports had slightly fallen to 14.58 MnT in H1 CY18 against 14.73 MnT in H1 CY17.

Pet coke imports also attained a multi-month high total of 0.5 MnT in Jun’18, but year-to-date exports were down 16% Y-o-Y in H1 CY18.

Major Coal Importers:
Japan remained the largest coal importer from Canada in H1 CY18, taking 23% of the total coal during the half year period. Japanese imports increased 4% Y-o-Y to 3.88 MnT in H1 CY18. Monthly imports stood 0.98 MnT in Jun’18, which was the highest total since Nov’16.

South Korea was the second-largest coal importer. The country’s import had fell 7% Y-o-Y to 3 MnT in H1 Cy18.

India replaced China to become the third-largest coal importer from Canada. Indian coal imports surge 51% Y-o-Y to 2.15 MnT, while Chinese imports decreased 36% Y-o-Y to 1.57 MnT in H1 CY18.
