US Coal Exports Up 20% Y-o-Y in H1 CY18

Coal exports from the US have recorded a remarkable growth of 20% during the first half of CY18. As per the data provided by US customs, the country has exported 73.6 MnT coal during Jan’18-Jun’18, compared with 61.21 MnT in Jan’17-Jun’17.

Relatively high seaborne prices for both coking and non-coking coal, in addition to a possible ban on pet coke in India, have opened the door for US exports, which have posted higher gains on the year-on-year basis during each of the first 6 months of CY18.

During Jun’18, US monthly coal exports had made slight improvement after going down in Jun’18. Export in Jun’18 stood 12.4 MnT against 12.34 MnT in May’18, which was also 19% higher on the year compared with 10.4 MnT in Jun’17.

Grade-wise Coal Exports in H1 CY18:
Coking coal accounted for nearly 40% of the total US exports in H1 CY18, whose exports have increased 24% Y-o-Y to 28.87 MnT during the half year period.

Pet coke was the second-largest exported grade of coal. Pet coke exports had fell 2% Y-o-Y to 20.38 MnT in H1 CY18.

Non-coking coal exports from the US surged 57% Y-o-Y to 20.11 MnT in H1 CY18, from 12.81 MnT in H1 CY17.

Major Coal Importers in H1 CY18:
India remained the largest coal importer, taking 15% of the total US coal in the half year period. Indian coal imports rose 48% Y-o-Y to 10.83 MnT in H1 CY18, compared with 7.34 MnT in H1 CY17.

Japan was the second-largest coal importer. The country had witnessed an increase of 16% during the half year period, which stood 6.21 MnT in H1 CY18.

Brazil became the third-largest coal importer by registering a growth of 32% Y-o-Y. Brazilian coal import from the US were marked 5.67 MnT in H1 CY18 against 4.3 MnT in H1 CY17.
