Japan: Finish Long Steel Exports Down by 7% in H1 2018

Japan, the world’s 2nd largest steel producer has deflated its Finish long steel exports in first half (H1) of CY18 against the same period of CY17.

As per the customs, the nation has exported about 1.18 MnT Finish Long steel in H1 CY18, down fall by around 7.1% against 1.27 MnT in H1 CY17.

However, on monthly comparison the Finish long steel exports down by 9.52% to 0.19 MnT in Jun’18 as compared to 0.21 MnT in May’18. Similar fall have been observed on yearly premises against 0.21 MnT in Jun’17.

Under Finish Long commodities following HS Codes has been considered – Bar & Rod (HS Code 7213 & 7214), MS Wire (HS Code 7217) along with Angle & Shapes (HS Code 7215 & 7216).

Bar’s & Rods have contributed the major exports proportionate during H1 CY18 and registered at 0.84 MnT (-8.7%) followed by Angle and Shapes 0.3 MnT (-9.09%) and remaining was Wire Rod 0.05 MnT (-16.67%). The changes are mentioned are compared to H1 CY17.

Country wise:

During H1 CY18, the largest importer of Finish Long Steel was South Korea – 0.39 MnT (-15.22%), Thailand – 0.18 MnT (0) & China stood at 0.12 MnT (-33.34%).

Key Updates

— As per the custom, Japan’s Finish Long Steel Imports up by around 41% in H1 CY18 with 0.31 MnT against 0.22 MnT in H1 CY17.

— Major Japanese trading house Mitsui & Co. has agreed to invest in Carpentaria’s magnetite iron ore concentrate pellet feed project in Australia to increase high grade iron ore supplies to meet global demand, as per sources.
