As per latest customs data, Japan flat steel imports which includes 7208 (HR coils /Plates),7209 (CR coils),7225 (Electrical sheets),7210/7212(GP/GC) registered decline of 8% to 2.06 in first half of CY18 which was 2.23 MnT in first half of CY17.
However on monthly basis the same plunged by 11% in Jun’18 to 0.33 MnT as compared to 0.37 MnT in May’18.
Similarly on yearly basis the nation’s flat steel exports shrink by 13% in Jun’18 against 0.38 MnT in Jun’17.
Japan crude steel output inch up slightly by 1% to 52.98 MnT in H1CY18 which was 52.3 MnT in first half of CY17.Thus increase in nation’s crude steel output results to lesser import volumes from Japan.However another reason could be Korea being the major exporter has reduced their export volumes amid strong demand in domestic market.

Country-Wise Japan Flat Steel imports in H1CY18 – In H1CY18,South Korea remained a major exporter and has imported 1.38 MnT in first half of CY18 lower by 11% against 1.55 MnT in first half of CY17.
Meanwhile second largest exporter was Taiwan exported 0.45 MnT of flat steel in H1CY18 fell by 8% as compared to 0.49 Mnt in H1CY17.
Lastly,China exported 0.20 MnT to Japan in Jan-Jun’18, lower by 5% against 0.21 MnT in Jan-Jun’17.
