Capacity in MnT
Apart from the capacity addition though the new mining projects, the coal minister has also informed that direction has been issued to the nominated authority to allocate 27 coal mines.
The break-up of the mines includes: 6 coal mines for the end use of production of Iron and Steel, 13 coal mines for the end use of Iron & Steel, Cement and Captive Power, 2 mines for state government company for coal sales and 6 mines for the purpose of own consumption for power.
Under Coal Mines Special Provision Act 2015, 84 coal mines in the country have been allocated so far.
Annual Coal Demand for Power Sector:
Mr. Goyal reiterated that the gap between demand and domestic supply of coal cannot be bridged completely as there is insufficient availability of coking coal and power plant designed on imported coal will continue to import coal for their operations.
However, as a result of enhanced domestic coal supply to power plants, the coal import by power plants has reduced from 80.58 MnT in 2015-16 to 56.41 MnT in 2017-18.
For the FY19, Ministry of Power has projected annual domestic coal requirement of 615 MnT (525 MnT from CIL, 53 MnT from SCCL and 37 MnT from Captive mines).
