India: Coal Production by Private Sector Increased 2% Y-o-Y in FY18

Indian coal production by private sector has increased 2% Y-o-Y to 34.746 MnT in FY18 (Apr’17-Mar’18) against 34.076 MnT in FY17.

The information was provided by the Minister of Railways, Coal, Finance & Corporate Affairs, Shri Piyush Goyal in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha. The minister was responding to a question pertaining to the fall in coal production from the private sector, to which he had replied no as an answer.

The data provided for production shows that the private sector had contribute around 5% in the country’s total coal output.

During FY18, India’s total coal production was marked at 676.48 MnT, of which nearly 93% of the output was yielded from CIL and SCCL.

CIL and SCCL had produced a total of 629.375 MnT coal in FY18 (567.365 MnT from CIL and 62.01 MnT from SCCL). The remaining production in the period was supplied by the private sector and other operating coal blocks.

India’s total coal production has reached 184.42 MnT during the first two months of FY19 (Apr’18-May’18).

CIL Coal Dispatch to Power Sector Rises 15% in Q1 FY19:
Commenting on the current scenario of coal supplies to power plants, Mr Goyal has claimed that there is no shortage of coal for power sector.

He added that CIL had dispatched 122.2 MnT coal to power sector during Q 1 FY19 (Apr’18-Jun’18), achieving a growth of 15% over the dispatch in the corresponding period of last year. The growth in dispatch of coal to power sector has helped coal based generation to achieve positive growth of 5.3% in the first quarter of FY19, which was 101.3% of programmed generation for coal based power.
