Taiwan: Iron Ore Import Drops 18% in May’18

Taiwan has depicted decline in imports for the month of May’18. The imports recorded at 1.67 MnT, down 18% as against Apr’18 imports at 2.04 MnT .On yearly premises, the imports in May’18 recorded fall of 31% as against imports in May’17 at 2.42 MnT.

For the duration Jan-May’18, the imports witnessed at 9.48 MnT, drop of 15% Y-o-Y as against 11.13 MnT in Jan-May’17.

Taiwan crude steel output, up in May’18

Taiwan crude steel production  is expected to increase from 1.66 MnT in Apr’18 to 1.72 in May’18.

The Non-agglomerated ore (Lump and Fines) witnessed 13% decrease in May’18 at 1.49 MnT as against 1.72 MnT in last month. The Y-o-Y imports in May’18 recorded sharp decline by 28% compared to 2.08 MnT in May’17.

Agglomerated ore (pellets and concentrates) imports in May’18 recorded 45% decline to 0.17 MnT as against 0.31 MnT in Apr’18. However, the Y-o-Y change in May’18 depicted significant decline in imports by 51% as against 0.35 MnT in May’17.

Australian iron ore exports to Taiwan decreased 16% M-o-M

Australia continues to be the largest exporter of iron ore to Taiwan in May’18 at 1.3 MnT (down 16% M-o-M) accounting for 78% of total Taiwan’s imports share for the month. Brazil stood second largest exporter at 0.23 MnT(down 32% M-o-M), contributing 14% of Taiwan’s import share.

Canada exported the remaining 8% of total export share at 0.14 MnT for the month. Canadian exports to Taiwan recorded stable for third consecutive month since Mar’18.
