USA – Flat Steel Imports Plunge 14% M-o-M in May’18

According to latest customs data, USA flat steel imports which includes (7208 HR coils/Plates,7209 CR coils,7210, 7212 GP/GC and 7225 electrical sheets) witness decline by 14% to 1.01 MnT in May’18 as compared to 1.17 MnT in Apr’18.

Similarly on yearly basis the same tumbled by 5% in May’18 against 1.06 MnT in May’17.

During first five months of CY18 (Jan-May) nation’s flat steel imports summed upto 4.91 MnT higher by 4% as compared to 4.72 MnT in similar time period of previous year.


USA likely to impose tariffs on steel exports from Europe,Canada and Mexico – In Mar’18, U.S. imposed tariffs of 25% on steel imports from the majority of countries barring six of its trade allies South Korea, Brazil, Argentina, European Union (EU), Canada, and Mexico.

However, in time span of two months (Apr-May), the three countries, South Korea, Brazil, and Argentina are covered under quota (restricting their steel imports to U.S. by a certain limit) and the remaining three, EU, Canada, and Mexico are also imposed with import tariffs of 25% with effect from 1 Jun’18.

Country-Wise USA Flat Steel Imports in May’18 – Canada was the largest flat steel exporter in May’18 and has exported 0.40 MnT higher by 3% against 0.39 MnT in Apr’18.

Second largest exporter is Mexico at 0.11 MnT in May’18,higher by 22% which was 0.09 MnT in Apr’18.Third largest exporter was Vietnam at 0.05 MnT in May’18 decline by 29% against 0.07 MnT a month earlier

Other major countries include Germany at 0.05 MnT, Taiwan at 0.04 MnT,followed by Turkey at 0.03 MnT and Netherlands at 0.07 MnT in May ’18.
