US coal exports have declined for the first time in CY18 on the monthly basis, by recording a fall of 9% M-o-M in May’18.
As per the data provided by the US customs, the country has exported 12.34 MnT coal in May’18 against 13.62 MnT in Apr’18. Exports in May’18 were however, 23% higher on the year compared with 10.03 MnT in May’17.
US coal exports have totaled 61.2 MnT during the first 5 months of CY18 (Jan’18-May’18), which was 20% higher on the year than the corresponding period’s total of 50.81 MnT recorded in CY17.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Coal exports of all the major grades had fell on the monthly basis in May’18, except Pet Coke, whose export had increased 2% on the month to 3.51 MnT.
US Coking coal were the largest exported coal grade in May’18. Export of Coking coal though had decreased 5% M-o-m to 5.06 MnT in May’18.
Non-coking coal export from the country was down 24% M-o-M to 3.03 MnT in May’18.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
India remained the largest coal importer, however, import by the country had fell 18% on the month in May’18. Indian coal imports from the US were marked 1.43 MnT in May’18 against 1.74 MnT in Apr’18, but was 29% higher on the year compared with 1.11 MnT in May’17.
Brazil overtook Netherlands to become the second-largest coal importer in May’18. Brazilian coal import from the US had increased 38% on the month to 1.05 MnT, while import by Netherlands was down 17% M-o-M to 0.9 MnT in May’18.
Japan was the third-largest coal importer from the US in May’18. The country had imported 0.98 MnT coal in May’18, up 3% M-o-M from 0.95 MnT in Apr’18, which was also 36% higher on the year compared with 0.72 MnT in May’17.
