Canadian coal exports have rebounded after falling in Apr’18, to record a sizeable growth of 22% in May’18.
As per the data provided by Canadian customs, the country had exported 2.87 MnT coal in May’18 against 2.36 MnT in Apr’18. Exports were however 7% lower on the year compared with 3.08 MnT in May’17.
During May’18, export of Bituminous coal from the country increased 28% M-o-M to 2.59 MnT compared with 2.03 MnT in Apr’18. Pet coke exports had witness a slight gain on the month from 0.25 MnT in Apr’18 to 0.27 MnT in May’18.
During the first 5 months of CY18 (Jan’18-May’18), Canadian coal exports have fell 6% Y-o-Y to 13.13 MnT, compared with the corresponding period’s total of 13.91 MnT in CY17.
Major Coal Importers:
Japan overtook India to became the largest coal importer from Canada in May’18.
Japanese coal imports were recorded 0.56 MnT, with a remarkable growth of 180% M-o-M in May’18. Indian coal import was 0.55 MnT during the month.
South Korea was the third-largest importer of Canadian coal in May’18. Import by the country had increased 66% M-o-M from 0.29 MnT in Apr’18, which was also 50% higher on the year compared with 0.32 MnT in May’17.
Among the top 5 coal importing countries, only China had recorded a fall in monthly coal intake from Canada in May’18.
