Indian Pellet Exports Double in June Over Strong Chinese Demand for High Grade Ore

Imposed sintering cuts in Tangshan and limited pellet supplies in global market boosted Indian pellet exports.

According to the customs data maintained with SteelMint, Indian pellet exports for the month of June’18, witnessed at 0.83 MnT, up by two folds as against May’18 exports at 0.40 MnT. Indian pellet export price assessment increased from USD 97/MT, FoB India in May’18 to USD 101/MT, FoB India in June’18. Indian pellet exports in Jun’18 stood so far in CY’18.

On yearly basis, pellet exports increased by 38% as compared to 0.6 MnT in Jun’17.
For first quarter FY’19, Indian pellet exports depicted decline of 7% at 1.83 MnT as against 1.97 MnT in Q4 FY’18. However, on yearly basis exports have increased by 8% against Q1 FY’18 at 1.70 MnT.

Chinese mills are actively looking low alumina high grade pellets cargoes due to strict govt. norms imposed on steel mills in Northern China.

BRPL remains largest pellet exporter in Q1 FY19 –

BRPL marked largest pellet exporter for Q1 FY’19 at 0.47 MnT, accounting 26% of total Indian Pellet exports share, up 21% against previous quarter exports at 0.39MnT. Other major exporters were KIOCL and JSPL at 0.41 MnT each, followed by Essar Steel at 0.27 MnT.

KIOCL stood the largest exporter for the month of June’18 at 0.24 MnT (up four folds M-o-M), accounting for 29% of total export share, followed by BRPL at 0.23 MnT (up by more than twice on monthly basis) and JSPL at 0.15 MnT.

India’s pellet exports to China increased 52% M-o-M

China continues to be the largest importer of Indian pellet in June’18 with imports at 0.49 MnT, up 53% M-o-M as against 0.32 MnT in May’18. UK stood the second largest importer at 0.12 MnT followed by South Korea and Japan at 0.05 MnT each.

Port-wise Indian pellet exports –

Pellet exports from Paradeep port recorded highest in June’18 at 0.44 MnT, up 48% M-o-M, followed by Mangalore port at 0.24 MnT (up four folds M-o-M) and Dhamra port at 0.11 MnT (up 95% on monthly basis).
