Turkey’s coal import has increased 33% M-o-M in May’18, which also marked the country’s highest monthly import for the CY18.
According to the data provided by Turkish customs, the country has imported 3.81 MnT coal in May’18 against 2.86 MnT in Apr’18, imports were also 17% higher on the year compared with 3.25 MnT in May’17.
In a recent development, the Turkish government is set to impose a 10% tariff on US coal imports as a counter-measure against the US decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Turkey.
During the first 5 months of CY18 (Jan’18-May’18), Turkey had imported 2.72 MnT coal from the US, which accounts for 16% of the country’s total coal imports in that period. Moreover, import from the US had increased 21% Y-o-Y from 2.25 MnT in Jan’17-May’17.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
During May’18, imports of all the coal grades had increase on the monthly basis. In fact, apart from non-coking coal, imports of the remaining coal grades had attained its highest monthly total for CY18 in May’18.
Import of non-coking coal had increased 17% M-o-M to 2.45 MnT in May’18, but was 5% lesser than the highest monthly total of 2.59 MnT attained in Feb’18.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Exporters:
Colombia remained the largest coal exporter to Turkey in May’18. Colombian coal exports had increased 20% M-o-M to 1.5 MnT in May’18, which was also 5% higher on the year compared with 1.43 MnT in May’17.
Russia was the second-largest coal exporter in May’18. Russian coal exports to Turkey had increased 24% M-o-M to 1.08 MnT. On the yearly basis, exports had slightly improved from the total attained in May’17.
Coal export from the US had recorded significant growth in May’18. US coal exports had surged 151% M-o-M to 0.93 MnT in May’18, which was also 158% higher on the year compared with 0.36 MnT in May’17. However, the tariff on US coal, if imposed, would certainly affect Turkey’s coal sourcing from the US.
