Japan’s billet exports recorded a decline of 4% Y-o-Y in the first four months of 2018, as per the country’s custom.
In the duration of Jan-Apr’18, Japan has exported about 1.24 MnT billet, decline by around 3.78% Y-o-Y against 1.29 MnT during the same period in 2017. In CY17, the country’s billet export was around 4.00 MnT & in CY16 it stood at 4.26 MnT.
Taiwan remains the largest importer of Japanese Billet in Jan-Apr’18, as the nation has contribute around 45.02% (0.56 MnT), followed by South Korea (25.27%), Thailand (11.23%), Philippines (7.93%) & US (6.36%).
In April 2018, the nation’s billet exports were recorded at 0.31 MnT, plunged by around 3.12% Y-o-Y against 0.32 MnT in April 2017. While it was experienced that exports to South Korea fell 38.46% Y-o-Y to 0.08 MnT in Apr’18 as against 0.13 MnT in Apr’17.
Further on monthly basis in Apr’18, it remain stable as against Mar’18 at 0.31 MnT but the shipments to Taiwan noticed a fall of 12.50% to 0.14 MnT, while those to Thailand dipped by 60% to 0.02 MnT.
Further in the month of April 2018, the crude steel production of Japan fell by 4% to 8.72 MnT in Apr’18 against 9.08 MnT in Mar’18 and in CY18 (Jan-Apr) it was approximately 35.13 MnT. Meanwhile, in CY17 the figure of crude steel production stood at 104.66 MnT, & 104.77 MnT in CY16 .

— During Jan-Apr’18, Japan imported around 60.86% of iron ore from Australia, which was around 24.71 MnT. Meanwhile the import of iron ore in the same preceding last year stood at 24.47 MnT. Current offer of Fe 62% Fines (Australia) are at USD 68/MT CNF China.
— Japan’s leading EAF steel producer – Tokyo Steel has slashed its domestic scrap purchase prices successively twice in last two days by JPY 500/MT(USD 5). Now H2 scrap fetches at JPY 36,000/MT (USD 327) for Utsunomiya works.
— As per recent customs data, Japan exported 0.66 MnT ferrous scrap in Apr’18 witnessing a rise of 24.52% M-o-M as against 0.53 MnT in its scrap exports in Mar’18.
— The export offers of 150*150 IS 2830 grade billet are currently at USD 505-515/MT FoB India & 125*125 3sp at USD 500-510/MT FoB Ukraine.
