Thailand Billet Imports Decline in Apr’18

Billet imports to Thailand reported a decline of 26% in the month of April 2018, the trade statistics released by the Thailand custom reported.

In the month of April’18, the nation has imported around 0.17 MnT billet against 0.23 MnT in Mar’18. Prior to this, on M-o-M in Mar’18 it remains downside against 0.28 MnT in Feb’18.

Further, on Y-o-Y in Apr 2018 imports registered a fall of 5.55% against 0.18 MnT in Apr 2017.

Japan was the major billet exporter to Thailand in Apr’18, which exported around 0.08 MnT (47%), followed by Iran & India whose exports stood at 0.07 MnT & 0.01 MnT , respectively.

While the nation has imported about 0.84 MnT Billet in Jan-Apr’18 against 0.78 MnT in Jan-Apr’17, incline by 7.69% on yearly premises.

During this period (Jan-Apr’18), Iran has exported approximately 52% billet (0.44 MnT) to the nation, followed by Japan (0.18 MnT) & India (0.08 MnT). Prior to this in the same preceding last year, Iran’s billet export to the nation was around 0.22 MnT, surge almost a half on yearly basis.

In CY 2017 (Jan-Dec) the country’s billet import was around 1.92 MnT & in CY 2016 it stood at 4.58 MnT.

Thailand witnessed five years’ highest ferrous scrap imports last year which stood at 1.49 MnT as against 0.90 MnT in CY16.

In the month of April 2018, the crude steel production of Thailand was around 0.38 MnT and in CY18 (Jan-Apr) it was approximately 1.59 MnT. Meanwhile, in CY17 the figure of crude steel production stood at 4.23 MnT, & 3.88 MnT in CY16.

Pig iron imports from Russia increased

India continues to remain the largest Pig iron supplier to Thailand. However in the month of April 2018, Russia topped the list with 0.05 MnT of exports to Thailand, which records the highest volume since Nov’16.

In CY18 (Jan-Apr) – Russia & India was the major pig iron exporter to Thailand which exported about 0.05 MnT (61.88%) & 0.03 MnT (30.90%), respectively.

In context to export prices, global offers for steel grade pig Iron is assessed at USD 365-375/MT FoB India & USD 395-405/MT FOB Brazil.
