After observing few trades a couple of weeks back, Indian HRC export trades to Nepal have seen a pause this week. India remained largest flat steel exporter to Nepal in 2017.
Market participants in conversation with SteelMint mentioned that around couple of weeks back Indian mills have booked some quantities of HRC for export to Nepal. However this week Nepal did not witness any significant Indian HRC export trades.
Last trades made to Nepal for HRC (2mm, tube grade) was assessed at around USD 670-685/MT, landed Raxaul border depending on the mills. This would come to around USD 640/MT (ex-plant).
Nepal imports around 0.35-0.37 MnT HRC/plates annually. Thus on monthly average basis it imports nearly 30,000-35,000 MT.
Nepal flat steel imports increase Jan-Apr’18 – According to customs data maintained with SteelMint, Nepal imported 0.23 MnT flat steel during Jan-Apr’18 compared to 0.15 MnT in same time frame last year. Imports of HRC/Plates have moved up from 0.12 MnT in Jan-Apr’17 to 0.15 MnT in Jan-Apr’18.

India remains the largest flat steel exporter to Nepal – So far in CY18 (till apr’18) India has exported 0.21 MnT flat steel to Nepal and remained largest exporter followed by China at 0.01 MnT. In CY17, India accounted for 91% share in Nepal flat steel imports. Other major exporting countries were China (6% share) and South Korea (2% share).
