Taiwan: Iron Ore & Pellet Imports Drop 37% in Q1 CY’18

Taiwan has recorded increase in quarterly imports for quarter ending Mar’18. The imports witnessed at 5.78 MnT, up 37% Q-o-Q as against 4.23 MnT in Q4 CY’17. However, on yearly basis imports recorded 9% decline in Q1 CY’18, as compared to Q1 CY’17 at 6.34 MnT.

In Mar’18, Taiwan imports recorded at 2.1 MnT, up 53% on monthly basis against Feb’18 imports at 1.37 MnT. However, on yearly premises, the imports in Mar’18 recorded fall of 7% as against imports in Mar’17 at 2.25 MnT.

The Non-agglomerated ore (Lump and Fines) witnessed rise in imports by 44% Q-o-Q to 4.98 MnT in first quarter CY’18 as against 3.46 MnT in previous quarter. However, the Y-o-Y imports in Q1 CY’18 stood 9% down compared to 5.5 MnT in Q1 CY’17.

Agglomerated ore (pellets and concentrates) imports in Q1 CY’18 recorded slight increase to 0.8 MnT as against 0.77 MnT in Q4 CY’17. However, the Y-o-Y change in Q1 CY’18 depicted marginal decline in imports as against 0.84 MnT in Q1 CY’17.

Australian iron ore exports to Taiwan increased 19% in Q1 CY’18

Australia continues to be the largest exporter of iron ore to Taiwan in first quarter CY’18 at 3.64 MnT (up 19% Q-o-Q) accounting for 63% of total Taiwan’s imports share for the quarter. Brazil stood second largest exporter at 1.57 MnT(up 64% Q-o-Q), contributing 27% of Taiwan’s import share.

Canada exported the remaining 10% of total export share at 0.57 MnT for the quarter ending Mar’18. Canada exports in Q1 CY’18 recorded an increase to more than twice the exports in previous quarter at 0.22 MnT.

In Mar’18, Australia marked the largest exporter to Taiwan at 1.45 MnT, an increase of 53% M-o-M compared to 0.95 MnT in Feb’18. Brazil stood the second largest exporter at 0.51 MnT (up 21% M-o-M) followed by Canada at 0.14 MnT.
