Indian steel major SAIL has successfully blown in its first blast furnace ‘Parvati’ situated at Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), Odisha which went for a revamp under company’s modernisation and expansion program in 2013.
Post expansion, the volume of company’s blast furnace no.1 has increased from 1,139 cubic meter to 1,710 cubic metre whereas its annual production capacity is set to increase by three times from 0.438 MnT to 1.015 MnT.
As per the market sources, the company’s revamped blast furnace has new features including new skip system, closed loop cooling system with soft water, twin flat cast houses at 90 degree apart with cast house defuming system, new turbo blower for high top pressure, new hot blast system for higher blast temperature, new coal dust injection system, new gas cleaning plant and a new dust catcher.
Apart from increasing production, the new furnace is likely to be more environment friendly as these features will help reduce its dependence on coal which will, in turn, improve the carbon footprint.
SAIL’S first blast furnace ‘Parvati’ which was started in the year 1959 had undergone closure for five times for major repair works before being completely closed down in August 2013 for a complete makeover. This blast furnace was entirely dismantled and a new one is now commissioned on the same foundation within the available space and resources.
SAIL’S Rourkela Steel Plant is the first integrated steel plant in the Indian public sector which was set up with German collaboration with an installed capacity of 1 MnT. Slowly its capacity was enhanced to 2 MnT of hot metal, 1.9 MnT of crude steel and 1.67 MnT of saleable steel. After implementing a massive modernisation and expansion, RSP’s capacity has been enhanced to 4.5 MnT of Hot Metal and 4.2 MnT of crude steel.
