Canada: Coal Exports Up 15% M-o-M in Mar’18

Canadian coal exports have recorded an increase of 15% on the month to 3.06 MnT in Mar’18, against 2.65 MnT in Feb’18.

Coal exports have been rising on the monthly basis for the past two months. However, on the yearly basis, coal exports from the country in Mar’18 had fell 13% from 3.52 MnT in Mar’17.

Total coal exports during the first quarter of CY18 have reached 7.9 MnT, up 3% Y-o-Y compared with 7.7 MnT coal recorded in Jan’17-Mar’17.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Export of both the majorly exported coal grades-Bituminous and Pet Coke, had increased during the month.

Bituminous coal exports were up 13% M-o-M to 2.65 MnT, whereas Pet Coke exports had jumped 64% on the month to 0.41 MnT in Mar’18.

The country had also recorded an export of 1,556 MT Met coke, during the month.

Major Coal Importers:
Japan replaced South Korea to become the largest coal importer from Canada in Mar’18. Japanese coal import had surged 146% on the month to 1.13 MnT in Mar’18, which was also 40% higher on the year compared with 0.81 MnT in Mar’17.

South Korea’s coal import had dropped 11% on the month to 0.55 MnT in Mar’18, which was also 2% lower on the year compared with 0.56 MnT in Mar’17.

China was the third-largest receiver of Canadian coal, with imports of 0.34 MnT in Mar’18. Monthly imports by the country had increased 17% M-o-M from 0.29 MnT in Feb’18, but had fell 61% Y-o-Y from 0.87 MnT in Mar’17.

US, India, Taiwan and Poland were the other major coal importers during the month.
