Trade statistics released by Canada customs shows that the iron ore exports by the country recorded at 9.16 MnT in Q1 CY’18. The exports witnessed decline of 19% Q-o-Q as against 11.26 MnT in Q4 CY’17.
On yearly basis, the exports in quarter ending Mar’18 witnessed in line with quarter ending Mar’17 at 8.94 MnT.
In Mar’18, the country’s iron ore exports recorded fall of 25% at 2.85 MnT as against Feb’18 exports at 3.81 MnT. However, on yearly basis, exports in Mar’18 stood almost similar to Mar’17 exports at 2.79 MnT.
The non-agglomerated ore (Lumps and Fines) depicted fall of 30% Q-o-Q to 4.99 MnT in Q1 CY’18 as against 7.13 MnT in Q4 CY’17. The Y-o-Y exports in first quarter CY’18 stood in line with first quarter CY’17 exports at 4.93 MnT.
Agglomerated ore (pellets and concentrates) exports in Q1 CY’18 witnessed at 4.17 MnT, almost stable on quarterly basis compared to Q4 CY’17 exports at 4.12 MnT. The Y-o-Y exports marked marginal increase of 4% in Q1 CY’18 as against Q1 CY’17 at 4.02 MnT.
France marked the largest importer of Canadian iron ore in Q1 CY’18
In Q1 CY’18, France stood the largest importer of Canadian iron ore at 1.54 MnT, up 9% as against Q4 CY’17 at 1.41 MnT. Japan stood the second largest importer at 1.36 MnT (down 24% Q-o-Q), followed by China at 1.35 MnT (down 47% Q-o-Q). Germany and Spain recorded significant increase in imports for the quarter at 0.76 MnT (up 33% Q-o-Q) and 0.4 MnT (up more than twice on quarterly basis) respectively.
In Mar’18, Canada recorded largest exports to Japan at 0.53 MnT, down 20% M-o-M as against 0.66 MnT in Feb’18, followed by France at 0.38 MnT (stable on monthly basis) and China at 0.37 MnT (down 27% M-o-M).
For the month, Belgium, Netherland and UK recorded significant decline in Canadian iron ore imports. Belgium imports recorded at 0.16 MnT (down 58% M-o-M), Netherland at 0.15 MnT(down 67% on monthly basis) and UK at 0.07 MnT (down 77%) .
