Government meeting related to environmental clearances for the coal and power projects has been postponed to next week. The meeting was expected to show a way out of the tussle between the environment ministry and the minister of coal and power on the controversial issue of green clearances for the infrastructure project.
The performance of coal and power sector has not been satisfactory so far in the current plan, the reason is due to non-availability of coal, 203 coal blocks are under “no-go” mining issue which is the main reason behind shortage of coal and this has affected the potential production of 660 MT of coal per annum.
An estimate made by planning commission , the demand-supply gap for coal in the ongoing year, which is also in the terminal year of the current Five-Year Plan, has been assessed at 142 million tones with domestic availability of only 554 MT against the requirement of 696 MT.
According to the Planning Commission, the country’s coal shortage is expected to be 200 MT by 2017 against 142 MT by 2012.
