CIL: Coal Production Up 17% Y-o-Y in Apr’18

Coal India Ltd (CIL) has reported production of 44.84 MnT coal during Apr’18, which was 17% higher on the year compared with 38.44 MnT in Apr’17.

Unlike the previous fiscal, the coal company was in a better position to schedule its coal production in Apr’18, as the coal inventory of 55.49 MnT available at its mines as on 1 Apr’18 was 19% lower on the year than the stock of 68.42 MnT coal recorded last year.

During the beginning of previous fiscal FY18, CIL had lowered its coal production on the yearly basis, to liquidate the excess of coal stocks. Coal production during Apr’17 had fell 4% Y-o-Y from 40.09 MnT in Apr’16.

On the monthly basis, the company had missed its coal production target of 46.83 MnT set for Apr’18, with only three subsidiaries-SECL, WCL and NECL, attaining their respective targets.

CIL’s coal production in Apr’18 was down 38% M-o-M from 72.28 MnT in Mar’18, when the company had recorded its highest monthly production to get closer of its yearly target of 600 MnT.

CIL Coal Dispatch:
CIL’s coal dispatch had increased 13% Y-o-Y to 50.97 MnT in Apr’18, compared with 45.29 MnT in Apr’17, but was 8% lower on the month compared with 55.19 MnT in Mar’18.

On the back of higher coal demand for the summer season and the low coal stock available at the power plants, CIL had emphasised more on coal dispatch.

The company’s coal dispatch was 6.13 MnT more than the monthly production; in fact, all the 8 subsidiaries of CIL had registered higher coal dispatch than the corresponding monthly production in Apr’18.

However, the coal company had fallen short of its monthly coal dispatch target of 56.75 MnT, by 10%. Amongst the 8 subsidiaries, only NECL had attained its monthly coal dispatch target for Apr’18.
