Taiwan: Iron Ore Import Drops 41% M-o-M in Feb’18

Taiwan has recorded decrease in monthly imports in Feb’18. It has witnessed decline of 41% M-o-M to 1.37 MnT in Feb’18 as against 2.31 MnT in Jan’18. The Y-o-Y imports witnessed a decline of 14% in Feb’18 as against 1.59 MnT in Feb’17.

For Jan-Feb’18, the total imports recorded at 3.68 MnT, down 10% on yearly basis compared to 4.09 MnT in same period last year. Australia marked the largest exporter at 2.2 MnT (down 17% Y-o-Y), followed by Brazil at 1.06 MnT(up 4% M-o-M) and Canada at 0.42 MnT (stable Y-o-Y).

The Non-agglomerated ore (Lump and Fines) witnessed fall in imports by 33% M-o-M to 1.28 MnT in Feb’18 as against 1.9 MnT in Jan’18. The Y-o-Y imports in Feb’18 stood in line with imports in Feb’17 at 1.26 MnT.

Agglomerated ore (pellets and concentrates) imports in Feb’18 recorded significant decrease of 78% to 0.09 MnT in Feb’18 as against 0.4 MnT in Jan’18. The Y-o-Y change in Feb’18 depicted steep decline by 73% in imports as against 0.33 MnT in Feb’17.

Australia continues to be largest iron ore exporter to Taiwan:

Australia continues to be the largest exporter of iron ore to Taiwan in Feb’18 at 0.95 MnT (down 24% M-o-M) accounting for 69% of total Taiwan’s imports share. Brazil stood second largest exporter at 0.42 MnT(down 34% M-o-M), contributing remaining 31% of Taiwan’s import share.

In Feb’18, Taiwan recorded nil imports from Canada against 0.42 MnT in Jan’18.
