The Supreme Court will not put an end to all mining activities in Bellary, but will give permission for mining that is actually required.
It will prepare a report of the need of iron ore and the quantity that needs to be exported. The forest secretariat, mines secretariat, steel and commercial secretariats have been directed by the Supreme Court to prepare a report within a week.
The Lok Ayukta’s report brought to light the people who are responsible for illegal mining. “A copy of the report, which was submitted to state government, will be also be submitted to the Supreme Court,” said SR Hiremath, convener of National Committee for the Protection of Natural Resources.
“Illegal mining was started by G Janardhana Reddy, G Karunakara Reddy, Sriramulu and their associates in Bellary. They have to take full responsibility of it and immediately resign from ministership. The government should punish them,” he said.
He also pointed out that the employees of these mining companies have been toiling hard and they must be, on humanitarian basis, paid at least three months’ salary. The employees should not take any extreme steps as mining will continue in the city, Hiremath said.
Illegal mining carried out by minister B Somanna, in the name of Matha Minerals, will be brought to the notice of the Supreme Court. The interim petition will be filed in the Supreme Court, Hiremath said.
