Turkey’s coal import has remained firm in Feb’18, recording marginal growth from the previous month. As per the data provided by Turkish customs, coal import by the country stood 3.68 MnT in Feb’18 against 3.67 MnT in Jan’18.
On the yearly basis, Turkey’s coal import had increased 13% from 3.27 MnT in Feb’17.
Total coal imported by the country during the first two month of CY18 (Jan’18-Feb’18) has increased 12% Y-o-Y to 7.35 MnT, compared with the imports of 6.56 MnT coal recorded in Jan’17-Feb’17.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Imports of Non-coking coal, which comprises 70% of the total monthly import, has slightly increased from 2.56 MnT in Jan’18 to 2.59 MnT in Feb’18.
Coking coal imports rose 26% M-o-M to 0.48 MnT in Feb’18, compared with 0.38 MnT in Jan’18. While, Pet coke imports had fell 20% M-o-M to 0.45 MnT during the month.
Met coke and Anthracite coal imports were recorded at 0.1 MnT and 0.06 MnT respectively in Feb’18.

Major Coal Exporters:
Amid the speculations regarding sulfur cap hike on thermal coal imports, Colombia has remained the preferred destination for coal buyers in Turkey.
Colombian coal exports increased 16% M-o-M to 1.81 MnT in Feb’18, which was also 47% higher on the year compared with 1.23 MnT in Feb’17.
As per the market reports, the Turkish government is considering to raise the sulfur cap on imported coal. The new cap being considered would allow utilities to import thermal coal with a sulfur content up to 3%. The decision is likely to boost up the import of high sulfur, high-CV US coal into the country, excluding Colombian coal, currently competing with Russian coal as a low-sulfur option.
Russian coal exports fell 36% M-o-M to 0.74 MnT in Feb’18. Besides, exports had also decreased 27% on the year from 1.02 MnT in Feb’17.
US was the third-largest coal exporter to Turkey in Feb’18. US coal export was 0.39 MnT, down 5% M-o-M from 0.41 MnT in Jan’18.
