According to the vessel line-up data compiled by CoalMint Research, Bangladesh coal imports have surged 460% M-o-M to 308,118 MT in Mar’18. Besides, imports were also 21% higher on the year compared with 255,570 MT in Mar’17.
Bangladesh majorly procures most of the imported coal shipments from Indonesia. The prevailing high offers for Indonesian coal in the month of Feb’18, had affected coal buying from the country. Consequently, Bangladesh had received only a single shipment of 55,000 MT coal in Feb’18.
However, with the softening of Indonesian coal prices corresponding to weakened demand from China, buying appetite from Bangladesh had increased in Mar’18.
Coal buying in Mar’18 was also boosted by the need to restock coal before the upcoming monsoon season, when demand for imported coal is generally slowed down.
As per the data compiled for Bangladesh coal imports, the country had imported 50,900 MT coal in the subsequent month of Apr-May last year, while no shipments were recorded in Jun’17-Jul’17 period.
Bangladesh total coal imports during the first three months of CY18 (Jan’18-Mar’18) has dropped 33% Y-o-Y to 625,678 MT, compared with 930,970 MT in Jan’17-Mar’17.
