Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) has created a new record in daily coal production, with extraction of 6.26 Lakh Tonne (0.626 MnT) coal on 21 Mar’18. This is the highest ever production recorded by any company in the country.
During FY17, MCL was the second-highest coal producer among the 8 subsidiaries of CIL, with total output of 139.22 MnT.
MCL along with SECL are the two largest coal producing subsidiaries, contributing nearly half of the CIL’s yearly coal production. CIL would be hoping the same sort of effort from these subsidiaries, if it wants to eventually get anywhere near to its production target of 600 MnT for FY18.
So far, CIL’s total production has reached 495.08 MnT during Apr’17-Feb’18 period, 1.5% higher on the year compared with 487.87 MnT during the same period of FY17. It implies that the company is running short of 104.92 MnT from its target of 600 MnT, with only the month of Mar’18 remaining to cover the deficit.
Last year, CIL had produced 66.07 MnT coal in Mar’17, to achieve total coal production of 543.13 MnT in FY17.
