Taiwan: Coal Imports Down 4% M-o-M in Jan’18

As per the data provided by customs, Taiwan coal imports were marked 4% lower on the month at 5.08 MnT in Jan’18, compared with 5.31 MnT in Dec’17.

On the yearly basis, coal import from the country had fell 12% from 5.79 MnT in Jan’17.

Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Bituminous coal imports, which comprise 97% of the total monthly coal imports, were recorded at 4.92 MnT in Jan’18. Imports had slipped 5% M-o-M from 5.18 MnT in Dec’17.

Taiwan had also imported small shipments of Met Coke and Pet Coke during Jan’18.

Major Coal Exporters:
Australia, Indonesia and Russia remained the top 3 major coal exporting countries to Taiwan in Jan’18. The three nations together constitute 97% of the Taiwan’s monthly imported coal supply.

Australian coal export to Taiwan increased 5% M-o-M to 2.89 MnT in Jan’18 compared with 2.75 MnT in Dec’17, but were 9% lower on the year compared with 3.19 MnT in Jan’17.

Indonesian coal exports had fell both on the monthly and year basis, and were marked at 1.15 MnT in Jan’18.

Russia had witnessed a remarkable growth in coal exports to Taiwan in Jan’18. Russian coal export had jumped 248% M-o-M to 0.8 MnT in Jan’18, which was also 31% higher on the year compared with 0.61 MnT in Jan’17.

Canada, South Africa, China and South Korea were among the other major coal exporters during the month.
