After Supreme Court ban on mining activities in Bellary over environmental issue has left most of the plants based in Bellary to shut their shop.
Now most of the sponge manufacturers in south have started sourcing iron Ore from Katni, a small mining sector in Madhya Pradesh which is known for marble mines. This area is known for producing low grade iron ore which ranges from 56% Fe to 60 % Fe.
“ Something is better than nothing, though ore is slightly softer, but convenient to transport it to our plant without much of mining formalities said a sponge manufacturer based in Koppal.”
It is also reported that bigger plants like JSW have started procuring ore from this sector in order to fulfil their mammoth demand.
Average prices of Iron Ore in the sector varies from Rs 4100-4500/ton for 5-18mm with 58 % Fe and transport charges varied from Rs 2200-2500/ton to Bellary said sources.
