According to the data provided by Canadian Customs, Coal Exports from the country had fell 22% M-o-M to 2.19 MnT in Jan’18 compared with 2.82 MnT in Dec’17. Coal exports were also 10% lower on the year than the levels attained in the month of Jan’17.
Canada had witnessed drastic fall in coal export to China; down from 0.32 MnT in Dec’17 to 0.07 MnT in Jan’18. Besides, export to its major customer-Japan, had also dropped during the month.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Coal shipments of both Bituminous coal and Pet coke, which are majorly exported from Canada, had fallen on the monthly basis.
Bituminous coal export was down 24% M-o-M to 1.94 MnT in Jan’18, while Pet coke exports had slipped 14% on the month to 0.24 MnT.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
Japan remained the largest coal importer in Jan’18, despite recording a decline of 35% on the monthly basis. Japanese coal imports decreased 35% M-o-M to 0.55 MnT in Jan’18, but was 12% higher on the year compared with 0.49 MnT in Jan’17.
South Korean coal imports rose 32% M-o-M to 0.41 MnT in Jan’18. However, on the yearly basis, imports from the country had fell 38% from 0.66 MnT in Jan’17.
India was the third largest coal-importer in Jan’18. Indian coal imports was recorded 0.23 MnT during the month, 26% lower than the previous month’s total of 0.31 MnT.
Netherlands, Poland, US, Taiwan and Brazil were among the other major coal importer in Jan’18.
