US: Coal Exports Down 5% M-o-M in Jan’18

US Coal Exports totaled 11.22 MnT in Jan’18, down 5% M-o-M from 11.86 MnT in Dec’17, as per the data provided by US customs. On the yearly basis, exports had increased 14% from 9.81 MnT in Jan’17.

Driven by the reforms initiated by the US Government, the country had witnessed remarkable growth in previous year’s coal export. Total coal exports had rose 36% Y-o-Y to 128.87 MnT in 2017. However, the beginning of CY18 had seen slight dip in coal exports on the monthly basis.

The country had also recorded weak exports to its major customers-India and Japan, during the month.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Among the major coal grades, Met Coke imports had recorded the only noticeable growth in exports during Jan’18. Exports had increased 8% M-o-M to 0.14 MnT in Jan’18.

Coking coal imports fell 9% M-o-M to 4.15 MnT in Jan’18, while non-coking coal imports were down 2% on the month. Pet coke imports had remained almost unchanged from the previous month.

Major Coal Importers:
India was the largest importer of US coal. The country had imported 1.72 MnT coal in Jan’18, down 10% from 1.92 MnT in Dec’17, but up 85% from the year-ago month.

Japanese coal import had also fell 10% M-o-M to 1.15 MnT in Jan’18 compared with 1.28 MnT in Dec’17. On the yearly basis, import from the country was 29% higher compared with 0.89 MnT in Jan’17.

Brazil was the third-largest coal-receiver during the month, with imports of 1 MnT coal. South Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, Morocco and Canada were among the other major coal receivers in Jan’18.
