In India, Met Coke imports were down by around 28.21% in Feb’18 in comparison with the imports in Jan’18, an analysis of the import data, maintained by the CoalMint Research database shows.
The downslide in the imports was a consequence of the international export offers going up significantly, on account of the escalating Coking Coal prices in the international market. As Met Coke buyers in India lowered their imports to tackle with the up swinging Met Coke prices, the imports were lower during the month under review.
In Feb’18, around 0.28 MnT of Met Coke was imported in India against the imports of around 0.39 MnT in the preceding month.

Compared with the corresponding imports in the same month of the last fiscal, the Feb’18 imports were however up by around 115.28% over the imports of around 0.13 MnT in Feb’17.
During Feb’18, the majority of the imports in the country were from China, accounting for approximately 32% share in the total imports in the month. Following the imports from China, the imports from Poland accounted for around 25% in the import share. Imports from Colombia accounted for around 18% in the share of the total imports in India during Feb’18.

During the penultimate month of FY18, the Vizag port had handled the highest volume of the import traffic; followed by the Krishnapatnam and Hazira ports.

The importers during the month were: Visa Steel, JSW Steel, Essar Steel, Rain CII, among others.
In Mar’18, there is however no prospect for any spurt in the imports as the buyers in India have been waiting and watching the market movements, ruled by high Met Coke prices.
