CIL Coal Production

CIL Coal Production Down 4% M-o-M in Feb’18

Coal India Ltd (CIL) has reported a decline in monthly coal production for the first time in the last 7 months, as coal output dropped 4% M-o-M to 54.46 MnT in Feb’18 against 56.69 MnT in Jan’18.

The coal miner had missed its production target of 61.43 MnT for Feb’18, only achieving 89% of the set target. However, coal production was slightly higher on the year-on-year basis compared with the output of 54.3 MnT in Feb’17.

Amongst the 8 subsidiaries of CIL, only ECL, NCL and NECL had achieved their respective target of coal production of Feb’18. Of which NECL (North Easter Coalfields Ltd) holds marginal share in total coal production.

The largest coal producing subsidiaries, SECL and MCL, had not only missed their respective monthly production target but also had witnessed fall in monthly coal production during Feb’18. SECL’s coal production was down 6% M-o-M to 13.33 MnT, whereas MCL’s production was down 16% M-o-M to 12.37 MnT in Feb’18.

Amid the domestic coal shortage, CIL was progressively increasing its monthly coal production in order to cater the growing demand of both the power and non-power sector. The company had also vowed to raise its coal production during the peak period of January, February and March.

However, with the drop in coal production in Feb’18, it would be difficult for the company to achieve its coal production target of 600 MnT set for the FY18 (Apr’17-Mar’18).

CIL had produced 495.09 MnT coal during Apr’17-Feb’18 period, which was 1.4% higher on the year compared with the total of 487.8 MnT attained during the same period in FY17. The company had missed its production target of 531.32 MnT set for the period, by 7%.

CIL’s Coal Dispatch:
CIL’s coal dispatch had also fallen on the monthly basis and was recorded 7% lower on the month at 49.97 MnT in Feb’18.

The company had managed to achieve 96% of the monthly dispatch target of 52.14 MnT, which was fixed lower than the actual coal dispatch of 53.7 MnT attained in Jan’18.

CIL had registered remarkable growth in coal dispatch during FY18, as the company had prioritise revival of the coal stock at the power plants. Total coal dispatch stood 525.09 MnT during Apr’17-Feb’18 period, 7% higher on the year compared with 490.61 MnT recorded during the same period of the previous fiscal.
