According to the data provided by the custom; Colombia has surpassed its yearly coal exports of 85.61 MnT achieved in 2016. The country had exported 91.05 MnT coal during Jan’17-Nov’17, which was 21% more than the export total of 75.55 MnT attained during the same period in 2016.
On the monthly basis, Colombian coal exports have been falling in line with the decline in coal demand from its chief consumer, Netherlands. Coal exports had decreased 12% M-o-M to 6.96 MnT in Nov’17, with shipments to the Netherlands falling 75% on the month to 0.61 MnT.
Still, Colombia had posted a growth of 25% Y-o-Y during the month, compared with the coal export of 5.56 MnT in Nov’16.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Colombian non-coking coal exports had fell 14% M-o-M to 6.49 MnT in Nov’17, compared with 7.56 MnT in Oct’17. A similar fall of 13% was seen in Pet coke exports during the month.
On the other hand, Met Coke and Coking coal exports had noted a growth of 56% and 33% on the month, to 0.28 MnT and 0.12 MnT respectively, in Nov’17.
In addition, Total yearly shipments of the major coal grades in CY17 had also surpassed the respective total of CY16, in Nov’17.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
Turkey replaced Netherlands to become the largest importer of Colombian coal. Turkish coal imports had rose 123% M-o-M to 2.41 MnT in Nov’17, which was also their highest monthly coal shipment from Colombia in CY17.
Netherlands coal import had fell 75% M-o-M to 0.61 MnT in Nov’17, but was still 154% higher on the year compared with 0.24 MnT in Nov’16.
Brazil became the second-largest coal importer in Nov’17, with total intake of 0.7 MnT coal. Chile, Spain, Portugal, Mexico and the US were among the other major coal importers during the month.
