Coal Market Snapshots

>> The Indonesian Government has put on hold the implementation of a proposed regulation which will mandate all the coal exporters in that country to use national maritime carriers and domestic insurance services. The regulation is believed to be put on hold on the concerns of its impacts on international trade. However, the government has taken a time frame of one year to re-think on the policy.

On an average, Indonesia exports 30-35 MnT of coal every month, and around 95% of the coal exports are dependent on foreign vessels.

>> Coal production in Columbia, the fifth largest coal producer in the world, produced 89.4 MnT of coal in 2017. Despite the production falling behind the production of 90.5 MnT in 2016 by 1.2%, the 2017 production was above the target set for the year at 89 MnT.

>>Coking Coal supplies from Australia could be impacted as heavy storm and rain are forecasted, and that could impact rail movements. Following the recent disruptions, caused by heavy rain, some sections of the Goonyella rail line in the Queensland region were re-opened for coal traffic yesterday. The rail line was closed due to disruptions caused by heavy rain.
