According to the data provided by Mongolian customs, the country had witnessed a decline of 25% Y-o-Y in coal exports during Jan’18.
Mongolia had exported 1.93 MnT coal in Jan’18 against 2.59 MnT in Jan’17. On the monthly basis, exports had decreased 4% from 2.01 MnT in Dec’17.
Mongolia had become an alternate source of coal for Chinese buyers, when the Chinese government had imposed ban on coal imports from North Korea. As a result, Mongolian coal exports had surged 28% Y-o-Y to 32.99 MnT in 2017.
However, the congestion at the border has created a hindrance in coal trading between the two countries, due to which Mongolian coal exports have fallen during the month.
Country-wise Coal Exports:
Nearly 95% of the total Mongolian coal had been exported to China, although exports had fell 27% Y-o-Y to 1.85 MnT in Jan’18. Monthly exports were also slightly down from 1.87 MnT in Dec’17.
Remaining coal quantity was exported to Hong Kong and Singapore in Jan’18; both the countries had recorded a fall in monthly coal imports.
