As per SteelMint’s analysis, iron ore movement across major producing states of the country recorded marginal increase by 3% M-o-M in Jan’18 to 12.42 MnT as against 12 MnT in Dec’17. The figures are compiled on the basis of movements made via railways, trucks, Karnataka and Goa e-auction data and import data as per customs. The figures indicated do not include the captive iron ore movement of SAIL & Tata Steel and movement for exports.
State-wise iron ore movement analysis:
Iron ore dispatches from Odisha declined in Jan’18 –
Iron ore dispatches from Odisha have witnessed a decline of 8% M-o-M in Jan’18 to 5.57 MnT as compared to 6.06 MnT in Dec’17. Rungta Mines recorded highest dispatch in Jan’18 at 2.10 MnT, up 17% M-o-M as against 1.80 MnT in Dec’17, followed by Indrani Patnaik at 0.71 MnT(up 92%) and OMC at 0.68 MnT(up 9%).The decline in dispatches so observed were due to illegal mining case in Odisha which led to closure of five major mines including Serajuddin, which otherwise dispatched major amount of ore from state.
C.G. based units iron ore procurement increased to 60 rakes in Jan’18:
India’s largest iron ore miner, NMDC supplied 413 rakes of iron ore from Bailadila mines, Chhattisgarh in Jan’18, an increase of 35% as against supply of 307 rakes in Dec’17. Out of 413 rakes supplied, 62 rakes were moved to state based units which were up 3 % M-o-M against 60 rakes in Dec’17. A total of 294 rakes was supplied to outside CG based units (up 38% M-o-M) and 57 rakes were loaded for export (up 68%). As seaborne iron ore prices were high and getting the decent realizations increased iron ore export from India.
Karnataka iron ore e-auction sales depicted significant decrease in Jan’18 –
Karnataka has registered decline in iron ore sales via e-auctions in Jan’18. The state witnessed decrease of 39% M-o-M in iron ore sales reaching 2.06 MnT as against 3.37 MnT in Dec’17. NMDC sold 0.92 MnT in Jan’18, down 28% as against 1.27 MnT in Dec’17 via e-auctions. JSW Steel continued to be the largest buyer at 1.27 MnT, followed by BMM Ispat at 0.17 MnT.
Indian iron ore & pellet imports increased in Jan’18 –
Indian iron ore & pellet imports increased to more than four-fold in Jan’18 to 1.95 MnT as against 0.38 MnT in Dec’17. The total imports of 1.95 MnT comprised solely of iron ore. India’s monthly iron ore import volumes in Jan’18 marked highest since Feb’15. JSW was the largest importer at 1.49 MnT, followed by Shreeyam Power and Steel Industries at 0.18 MnT, Jindal SAW at 0.17 MnT, Swiss Singapore (0.06 MnT) and Gallant Metal/Varsana Ispat (0.06 MnT). In Jan’18, Indian Steel mills turned active for imports owing to shutdown of five mines in Odisha due to inability to submit penalty amount by the deadline of 31st Dec’17, as per SC verdict.
Indian iron ore & pellet export declined in Jan’18 –
Indian iron ore & pellet exports moved down 21% M-o-M in Jan’18 and stood at 1.88 MnT against 2.39 MnT in Dec’17. Indian iron ore exports have declined by 18% to 1.23 MnT in Jan’18 against 1.50 MnT in Dec’17. Vedanta, remained the largest iron ore exporter at 0.45 MnT in Jan’18, down 12% against 0.51 MnT in Dec’17. Other major exporters were MMTC (which exports on behalf on NMDC), increased its exports by 57% from 0.14 MnT in Dec’17 to 0.22 in Jan’18. Other major exporters were – Rungta Mines at 0.12 MnT(down by 37% M-o-M) and VM Salgaonkar at 0.09 MnT.
Indian pellet exports moved down by 28% M-o-M to 0.64 MnT in Jan’18 compared to 0.89 MnT in Dec’17. KIOCL became the largest exporter for Jan’18 with exports at 0.22 MnT, accounting for 35% share in total pellet exports from India. JSPL recorded the 2nd largest exports at 0.15 MnT, followed by Essar Steel at 0.11 MnT, BRPL at 0.06 MnT, Arya Iron & Steel at 0.06 MnT, Bagadiya Brothers at 0.05 MnT.
