There was a rise of around 62.5% in the imports of Met Coke in India in Jan’18 over the imports in Dec’17. An analysis by CoalMint Research shows that the rise in the imports during the month was due to the higher procurement on account of the gradual decline in the Met Coke prices, being influenced by the sinking Coking Coal prices in Jan’18.
In Jan’18, around 0.39 MnT of Met Coke was imported in India against the imports of around 0.24 MnT in the preceding month.

On year-on-year comparison, the imports during the month also were up by around 62.5% over the imports of around 0.24 MnT in Jan’18.
A break-up of the countries of import shows that imports from China had escalated significantly during the month, and that from the other nations declined. As a matter of fact, Indian buyers prefer the Chinese material due to the superior quality.

Among the various ports in India, the Mangalore port had handled the highest volume of import traffic during the month; followed by the Paradip and Dharamtar ports.

During the month under review, JSW Steel was the highest importer with 81,650 MT of imports; followed by JSW Energy and Tata Steel with the respective imports of 35,000 MT and 32,000 MT. Other importers during the month were: Neo Metaliks, SLR Metaliks, Balasore Aloys, Kalyani Steel , Sona Alloys, among others.
