Turkey Billet Imports Decline in 2017

Billet Imports to Turkey went down by around 24% Y-o-Y in 2017 as per the recently released data by Turkey’s custom.

The nation has imported about 4.64 MnT Billet in the calendar year 2017 against 6.12 MnT in 2016, dipping by 24.18% on yearly premise. While in the month of Dec’17, imports declined slightly by 2.22% to 0.44 MnT in Dec’17 against 0.45 in Nov’17.

During the period of 2017, the largest exporter of Billet to Turkey was Russia, whose export to the nation was recorded at 1.76 MnT against 2.05 MnT in 2016, declining by around 34% Y-o-Y. It may also be mentioned that Russia has been the largest exporter since CY15, while in CY14 Ukraine topped the list.

Further, the major sellers of billet to Turkey in CY17 was – Russia 1.76 MnT (37.94%), Ukraine 1.11 MnT (24.03%), Brazil 0.88 MnT (18.91%), Netherlands 0.12 MnT (2.68%) & United Kingdom 0.12 MnT (2.56%).

Few major factors:-

The crude steel production of Turkey was around 37.524 MnT in 2017 which increased by 13.15% against 33.163 MnT in 2016. Prior to this it was at 31.517 MnT in CY15, according to the World Steel Association.

As per assessment it was also noticed that billet imports by the nation has declined since the calendar year 2016 in the month of February due to the better availability of scrap at low cost against billet.

Absence of Chinese billet in seaborne market, which created a dearth increased global billet prices, as producing billet from scrap is much more profitable than importing billet.

Turkey’s ferrous scrap imports have decreased by 12.61% M-o-M to 1.87 MnT in Nov’17 against 2.14 MnT in Oct’17.

The reference index price for US origin HMS (80:20) scrap stood at USD 343/MT, CFR Turkey, prices remains firm from last week trade activities.
