South African ferrous scrap exports remained concentrated to Bangladesh, Pakistan and India in 2017. While Indian scrap imports fell nearly to half on the Y-o-Y basis from South Africa.
As per recently released customs data, South Africa has witnessed 28% Y-o-Y fall in ferrous scrap exports in 2017. The country exported 463,303 MT ferrous scrap in 2017 while South Africa’s exports were at 639,954 MT in 2016.
South Africa exported 38,206 MT ferrous scrap in Dec’17 witnessing decline of 20% M-o-M against 47,965 MT ferrous scrap exports in Nov’17.
On Y-o-Y basis ferrous scrap exports witnessed a fall of 10% in Dec’17 as ferrous scrap exports were 42,453 MT in Dec’16.
On the other hand, South Africa witnessed increased ferrous scrap exports by 33% Q-o-Q in Q4-CY17. As against 93,146 MT exports in Q3-CY17, South African ferrous scrap exports stood at 123,659 MT in Q4-CY17.
During the first half of 2017, South Africa exported 246,499 MT ferrous scrap which has fall by 12% to 216,805 MT in H2-2017. While exports in H2-CY17 decreased 44% Y-o-Y against 384,046 MT exports in H2-2016.
Majority of the scrap exports made from South Africa have been done through major ports like Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg.
Pakistan emerged as largest importer of South African ferrous scrap in 2017 –
Pakistan emerged as the largest importer of South African ferrous scrap in CY17. Pakistan imported 171,164 MT ferrous scrap followed by India which imported 144,671 MT ferrous scrap in CY17. Pakistan and India occupied 36% & 31% shares of total ferrous scrap exports from South Africa respectively.
In 2017, India’s ferrous scrap imports from South Africa fell nearly to half (-47% Y-o-Y) while Bangladesh registered 85% growth as against ferrous scrap imports during CY16.
In Dec’17, Pakistan imported 15,814 MT ferrous scrap while Bangladesh imported just 2,387 MT in Dec’17 witnessing fall by 86% M-o-M in its ferrous scrap imports from South Africa against 16,749 MT ferrous scrap imports in Nov’17. India imported 10,232 MT ferrous scrap in Dec’17 from South Africa.
